Cottage Crafts for Children: Build a Cottage Scene

For local Nova Scotia children at home and the many US children who were not able to travel this year to the cottages, I wanted to create craft ideas as part of my larger “Kare Atlas” project. In this first craft, I was inspired by the view from the private beach at Explorer’s Cottage.

The mountains are just cut out paper shapes and the little boats are are toothpicks and origami paper glued together. The cottage can just be made in a creative way with Nova Scotia as inspiration; I used wooden stirrers and glued them together with school glue, as well as paper.

The idea is to make this with anything around the house. I will not purchase anything for all the projects, as I know people have limited materials. Yupo paper can be used. If you do not want to use plastic, Japanese paper such as rice paper or mulberry paper are also great! Anything transparent!

The first project helps with motor and spacial skills, as well as life and emotional skills, such as problem solving, concentration, and working together. This can also be used to talk about how things that are very far away may seem lighter in color and blurrier than things that are close. Children can use these ideas in their drawings and paintings.
